Shawna Rodrigues [:Have you ever had a voice in your head that whispers, Maybe I am not cut out for this, especially when you face setbacks. Well, here is the truth. Most successful solopreneurs are not the ones who never fail. Failure is part of the process. People call it research and development. You've got to try a few things that don't work before you find the things that do. You have to master the act of bouncing back stronger. So today, we're going to share some game changing mindset shifts that have transformed my own journey that can help to transform your journey.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Because you don't want to be a struggling freelancer, a struggling individual trying to make on your own. You want to be a thriving business owner. Best part, these aren't just feel good mantras. These are practical tools that can start helping you to reshape how you approach challenges and how you can get through to be able to be the successful entrepreneur I know you are. I'm so glad you're here today so that we can unlock your true potential. Welcome to Authenticity Amplified, your resource for attracting and connecting to your ideal client, the go to podcast for entrepreneurs on the go to grow their business. I'm your host, Shawna Rodrigues, podcast strategist and the founder of the Solopreneur sisterhood. I'm here to bring community to the entrepreneurial journey and learn alongside you as we tap into knowledge and insights from experts to help you grow your business.
Shawna Rodrigues [:I know how much effort you put into your business. And, this is useful and practical information coming straight to you wherever you are, whenever you have the time to listen. The first tip that we are going to jump into is what I am calling the 24 rule. And the importance of the twenty four hour rule is that you need to actually experience the emotions. When hard things happen, when disappointment happens, when we're experiencing grief because something's not working out, which I'm recording this the week of the election, and there are a lot of folks in the country that are grieving the outcome of that election. Right? You need to feel the emotions. You need to give yourself an opportunity to feel and experience and move through that. So if we don't, that can cause issues, that can cause bottle up, that can cause us the pushing through just leads to burnout.
Shawna Rodrigues [:It's like spinning a wheel in the mud and just like mucking up the tire and burning up the rubber. We have to let ourselves move through those emotions. So give yourself time and space to actually move those emotions and actually experiencing them. And that's where the twenty four hour rule comes in. And it might be that you need less than twenty four hours. You know yourself best, but start with that and see where you need to go. So give yourself time to actually feel that emotion, experience that, and work on going to the other side of it instead of trying to just push it away and keep pushing through. Because individuals who start their own businesses are folks who are used to having successes, who are used to trying things, taking risks and finding the ways to come out ahead.
Shawna Rodrigues [:When you're starting a business, you're doing something you've never done before, and there's going to be setbacks and things that don't work that easily, things that are disappointing and frustrating. So you need to give yourself a moment to have those emotions. This is making me think I wish I would have brought my little painting with me. The other day, I was experiencing a setback that I've been experiencing for a month with the same thing that I've been trying to work to get to the other side of with a company and something that needs to move forward. And I just hit like a really hard point with it where it wasn't moving forward. I was very frustrated, very disappointed because it's something I wanted to move forward and it just wasn't. And I keep hitting that wall. And right now, as folks in business, we experienced this where we don't have someone to just talk to and resolve something.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Right? Like it used to be that you would just call somebody. It would take the time to call somebody, be call somebody and take care of it. And a lot of times in our businesses now, we're dealing with interfaces where it takes two days, two weeks, a considerable time for somebody to respond to us via email, not via phone, not via let's have a back and forth conversation that might take five to ten minutes to resolve. Instead, it takes an email. They didn't understand something, and so then they write back and say it's resolved. When it's not resolved, so it's another email as this back and forth. So I've had the same chronic issue for some time, and it hit this wall. And he literally had to get up from my desk and go downstairs and start painting because I just couldn't.
Shawna Rodrigues [:It was 01:30 in the afternoon. I had another meeting at 03:00. I just needed to just walk away from my desk and take that break and, like, hit that reset button because it was just it's been this chronic thing for some time, and it's in this causing me a decent amount of stress, but I needed to like experience that emotion, that frustration, and then find a way to move through it, to get back into my space, to be able to be the excited, joyful, connected individual I am in my business and in the work that I do and be ready for that call at 03:00 to be present and part of the work that I'm doing and what I want to be doing. So give yourself that space and time and figure out what it is you need to be frustrated, to be unhappy about something, to be annoyed, to have grief over the outcome of something and give yourself that time and then move to the other side of it and find the activities that help you move through that space. For me, it was going to go paint. It might be a conversation with someone who can help you see the other side and it might be activities. It might be that you need to actually like look at the experience, find the specific lesson in it that you can be able to apply immediately from it to be able to see the lesson learned. I've recently been doing some stuff with hiring.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And so for me, looking at that and figuring out what was the things that weren't working well previously and finding that little nugget of, Oh, this is what I was doing at my hiring really helped me to be able to move past the grief I had and frustration I had with some of the things that turned out with some of the staff that I was working with. And so it's helpful for that and for you to be able to pivot it and be able to take that setback and be able to see it towards your your long term growth. And so being able to give yourself the time to have that emotion, to be able to experience that and give it a window, but then give it the time to process it to get to the other side of it. And so we've had the grit show as a podcast that I've had for two and a half years now, And we definitely talked about burnout. And one of the things about burnout is those emotions and not fully experiencing them and let them move out of your system and just piling those up because the actual emotion can be very temporary, but it's when we like hold it. And by not letting it move through our system and not moving to the other side of it, we hold onto it and that can cause extra layers and extra energy. So give yourself time to be able to process something, let it simmer, but do that. Maybe set a timer on your phone that gives yourself that twenty four hours and twenty four hours later, like when that timer goes off, be like, have I moved through this emotion? Have I gone to the other side of it? What do I need to do to get to the other side of it? Do I need to process this a little bit? Do I need to get the lesson from it? Have I not fully grieved this? Have I not fully felt the frustration to get to that piece? And for me with one of the staff issues I had recently, it took actually talking to one of my girlfriends, like, not somebody in business who was able to say, like, yes.
Shawna Rodrigues [:That. Yes. That. Because I was having other individuals I spoke to that were just like, oh, yeah. Like, this group, this age group, finding hiring anyone just, like, very dismissive, not intentionally being very dismissive. For this person, I was like, oh my gosh. That's so frustrating. That must have been yeah.
Shawna Rodrigues [:You really, like, worked well to hire this person and were really excited about this. That must have been very disappointing. And, like, honoring my emotions instead of being very dismissive of the situation of, like, oh, yeah. Hiring is just hard. Like, nobody can hire good people. Like, that's just the way it is. Like, that, that, that, like, whatever it is. I'm like, no.
Shawna Rodrigues [:But I feel, like, disappointed. I feel like this person let me down, and I feel like my work wasn't being honored by them. And, like, all these things I was feeling and this person's like, oh, yeah. And I'm like, yeah. But, you know, my there's they have a kid that's working age to say, like, you know, my kids working on extra shifts and my husband's getting on them because they're not picking up extra shifts even though they're working more than full time and they're still in high school. And that was, like, encouraging to me that, well, there are some people out there working hard. Like, there is still hope. So they gave me hope as well as, like, honoring my frustrations and to be like, okay, I can get back out there and I can do this and find good people.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And I am finding good people. And that mindset shift in working with that emotion was helpful for me. So felt the emotions and then got my lesson from it. But what I feel I was doing and the hiring process that may have led to that and what I'm doing a little bit differently going forward. So process that emotion, but give yourself the time, that twenty four hour rule of like, I need to be able to feel this emotion and give myself time to actually experience it. All right. Tip number two, the compound effect, especially when it comes to you developing your expertise. So whenever we start a business, there's going to be areas that we're not as proficient at or that take time to build.
Shawna Rodrigues [:For some of us that's marketing, for some of us that's sales, for some of us that might be bookkeeping, or it might be your customer client interactions, or it might be building systems. And sometimes, because these are things that we feel challenged in, we kind of shy away from them, and we don't wanna approach them and get them done. This can be a good time to take an approach where we look at the compound interest or the compound building is compound interest or most familiar with that term. So when you compound things, you build upon them slowly and add a little bit and it multiplies in exponential ways. Right? So you build upon it more slowly. So as something that you want to start working on improving on is your lead generation. You wanna start connecting with more people online. Or if let's say that you're working on bookkeeping and it's completely overwhelming, or let's say that you wanna work on your website and it's completely overwhelming, or you wanna learn about how to do your website and it's completely overwhelming.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Whatever you choose, you actually give it a daily time of twenty minutes that you're going to start working on this one skill or this one thing that you're wanting to improve in your business, and you give it that bit of time each day. So instead of me saying, like, I'm gonna take care of my website, it's overwhelming, but I'm gonna give myself, like, these three days, it's gonna be dedicated to the website. A better project, if I'm really excited about getting a workshop or planning a retreat or something that I love doing, like giving it chunks of time when I can get in the flow and really do it, like, that's what you save chunks of time for. The things that, like, are a little harder, but you can build those skills upon each other and make an improvement and make it different are the things you put into twenty minute blocks. So if that's lead generation and you need to get out and make connections, and so every day you send an email to a specific person or you get into Instagram and make a connection with somebody you think might be a good client, Like, those type of things are what you give yourself time for each day. And it might start with you do reading articles or doing trainings on lead generation for twenty minutes a day. Right? So you identify that or if it's bookkeeping and you start learning that each and every day. You figure out what that thing is that you need to put some time and energy into.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And instead of giving yourself like this big chunk, you're going to work on it, that you give yourself a little bit of time each day to do that so that you're compounding that expertise and building on that and making that improvement so that you're making it something small that you're slowly adding to and building on instead of this giant thing that you think you're gonna quantumly gain. The other benefit to that, if it's something that isn't simple for you, that's something that takes that effort, you're building it in a way that you're gonna remember how it was done. You're going to ingrain it in a different way doing it like that. Right? So something that I love, I love writing. So, like, every single day, twenty minutes may not be what I need for writing. It might be that I can sit down and just do it for a long period of time because I enjoy it and I get in the flow and that works for me. And so I enjoy reading about it and learning about it and then sitting and doing it for a long period of time because that's something I enjoy. Whereas if I don't enjoy it, then doing it a little bit each day makes it easier for me to kind of remember, okay, this is what I'm doing.
Shawna Rodrigues [:This is the flow. This is gonna, like, retain it better and to build on it easier if I'm doing it and get that compound piece of that expertise. So it's a great way to build expertise, especially in an area that you're not as confident in by doing in little chunks each day. And you can plan out that maybe today is twenty minutes if we're doing lead generation and I'm actually practicing the tools that I'm learning. So I'm actually sending the emails that is like connecting with people or doing the posts that are intentionally trying to draw people in or working on lead magnet. And then the next day, I'm actually doing research and learning more about lead generation. And the next day, I'm actually doing the activities or generating the leads so that you're kind of doling it out in ways that it feels easier for you to build on it and to do that. So that compounding piece is what we're doing with us so that we can get to that level.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And that's what I did with bookkeeping actually. And I did hire a fabulous bookkeeper who I enjoy, but doing it in small chunks made it so that it was easier for me to kind of my part of it to do it in smaller chunks instead of having to do it in big windows. And now I do it in large windows because I kind of got that flow and got that. This is what these pieces are and it got ingrained on different levels so I can do it in chunks now. But when I first started, I needed to dole it out into smaller pieces to get in there and get that flow and understand what the different pieces I needed to do were and get familiar with them and make it so it was just second nature to do my part of that work. So it's helpful to build those skills in that smaller chunks so you can build it up like that. Alright. Tip number three, let's get strategic with discomfort.
Shawna Rodrigues [:So this might relate back to some of the things we just talked about with tip number two. So if there are things that you are not comfortable with, it's important to be very intentional and strategic with those things instead of leaving it very vague and willy nilly about what you're going to do. Right? So when we talked about the twenty minutes, we were very intentional about the activities we were going to do. So when it comes to things that you are not comfortable with, that perhaps you don't like talking on a mic, you don't like being on video camera. And so for those things, instead of saying, oh, I'm going to get on camera more. Oh, I'm going to talk on a mic more. That you actually need to get very strategic and specific about those things and make a plan to do them. Because when you leave it very vague, it's really hard to actually do it.
Shawna Rodrigues [:So you need to decide that Monday mornings are time for discomfort and that you're gonna be strategic about your discomfort and that's when you're gonna do the activity that you're uncomfortable with and just get it done. And so every Monday, you're going to record a ninety second reel to put up because that's when you're going to do this com this activity that you're less comfortable with and get it over with and get it done. Or perhaps you don't like collecting money from clients. That's the one that I'm not so great about. I get so excited that I send one email to say, okay, it's time for your renewal. Here it is. And then they don't respond. I'm like, Oh, I got it.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And it takes me another two weeks to follow-up. So if that's the thing that like I need to do better about is doing the money generating activities and following up with clients about money and paying for the next round, every Monday I'm going and checking and doing that activity. I haven't put that to that. I did do that with doing reels and do recording that you get strategic about what you're gonna do and you put a goal on it. And you maybe don't need to do it every single day, like, as talking about doing the other one, the compound interest of learning and mastering because more about the skill that you're learning and mastering. Right. But doing that, so it's every Monday that you do that. So if it's, I'm going to get on camera more, I'm going to get on a mic more, whatever that you're trying to do, something that makes you uncomfortable, that you need to get more comfortable with in your business, that you do it every Monday at a certain time.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And then it's asked what you do on that Monday morning to get more comfortable with it. And you're being strategic and intentional, and you have a very specific goal instead of vaguely saying like, I need to get better about collecting money from clients, or I need to get better about being on camera more or being on a mic more. You actually set a specific thing you're going to do and then get yourself to do it because that is what helps to like get past the discomfort is if you have the specific activity and then you realize that you get more comfortable and you get in a flow with it and you get a routine for it, you get in a routine with it and then it's a lot simpler and you don't have the same discomfort around it, which is the whole point in the whole goal. Right? So that's and if it was perhaps your thing is networking. Right? That you intentionally say, like, I'm going to do something every Monday that's a follow-up for networking. So for me, that's more my thing is I'm good at networking. I'm just really bad at the follow-up. And maybe it is a discomfort thing for me that I'm not sure about how to do that.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And so that would be the important step is to say like, okay, on Mondays, I'm going to do the discomfort of doing a follow-up online networking. So whatever you might do, just do that extra little follow-up piece on your Mondays or choose your day. Maybe your day is Friday so that you can be excited about the weekend because you got it over. But be strategic and choose a specific activity instead of just saying, oh, I'm gonna get better about this. Actually, figure out what that is. Okay. So this is what we're doing. This growth mindset is not just about positive thinking.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Right? It's about productive and focused. And so we start with our twenty four hour rule to actually experience the motion and then move through our setbacks. Right? And then we talked about how that the compound effect can really help us to increase our expertise and move through things that we find challenging to get to the next level, to help us identify our areas for growth and to keep moving through that growth. And then we talked about the strategic way we handle things that we're uncomfortable with that bring us discomfort. As there are so many areas for us to grow as entrepreneurs, right? So many areas to grow. It's kind of amazing when you get into this and you're like, I thought it was going to be this and it's this and this and this and this and so that you can have all those areas. So our next episode is on search engine optimization with Sarah and it's, she has amazing tips. It's gonna be so helpful.

If you're a subscriber of a podcast though, you get a bonus little piece from this conversation.
